Back to school — well in my case, back to Varsity

The big thing yesterday was when all the kids went back to school, the whole country on the same day due to the fact that everyone will have a 5 week holiday in June/July for the World Cup.  If you do not know what World Cup, under what rock have you been hiding?

Now in my case (or my kids should I say), it is not back to school but back to varsity.  Although varsity only officially starts on 25 Jan, both my son and daughter went back this week.  My daughter is first year and have to do all the first year things for the next 2 weeks – what a lot of fun.  My son is third year but he is a mentor for the first years and have to babysit the lot of first years.

They are both at Stellenbosch, daugther studying B.Sc Human Science and son studying Chemical Engineering.  It is going to be weird not to have to worry and care about school things anymore.  My kids are not kids anymore but young adults and I am so proud of them.  Yes, we bump heads, have arguments and fights but that is how things have to be.  They have there own opinions and have to learn by making mistakes and bumping there heads.

Off to go drop of things that my son/daughter forgot at home.  Any advice how to get them to remember?  Like they say in Afrikaans … head full of “muisneste” :)

Whether you have kids at school or varsity, let it be a good learning year for them and do allow them to have some fun along the way also.

Start of 2010 in Plett …

It was a cloudy and misty evening in Plett.  But for a couple of minutes the full moon shown through the clouds. This moon is called a Blue Moon since it is the second full moon for December 2009 and the 13th full moon for 2009.

As is tradition, New Year was seen in with fireworks at the Beacon Island Hotel … some of the photos I managed to capture from my viewing point.

Movie — New Moon – bad, really bad.

My daughter convinced me last night to go watch The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

Do not know if it is just me but it is one of the worse movies I have ever seen.  I was actually bored most of the time.  Was predictable, story line was non-existent and acting was crap.  The effects was not even good.

I did see the first one and they was not great but at least better than this one.  I just hope there is no 3rd. realy

Why you should not call in sick and go play golf?

One Sunday morning, a priest wakes up and decides to go golfing. He calls his boss and says that he feels very sick, and won’t be able to go to work.

Way up in heaven, Saint Peter sees all this and asks God, ”Are you really going to let him get away with this?”

”No, I guess not,” says God.

The priest drives about five to six hours away, so he doesn’t bump into anyone he knows. The golf course is empty when he gets there. So he takes his first swing, drives the ball 495 yards away and gets a hole in one.

Saint Peter watches in disbelief and asks, ” Why did you let him do that?”

To this God says, ”Who’s he going to tell?”

What have I been up to …

I have not blogged for a while .. have just been tied up with other things.  So what were that other things:

  • Work wise -  have completed all projects I was working on.  Was a time to reflect on what I want to do next.  Is IBM the correct company for me to work at?  Have not got that answer yet.  In the mean time I am looking at other IBM projects around the world like Singapore, Malaysia and even London … so I might pack my bags early in the new year. 
  • Daughter is almost done with Matric exams — Friday she writes her last exam.  Currently battling to find accommodation for her in Stellenbosch next year.  She will be studying Human Science and Biology (definitely not fathers daughter :) ).  Think we have find something but it is costly … at least it is safe, close and in a varsity community and that is what is important.
  • Son has completed 2nd year Chemical Engineering.  It was a tough year and he had to write a couple of subs.  Have to wait and see how he does on it.  At least he can carry on with his 3rd year next year.  Lets hope it is a better year for him next year.  Second year is always the toughest and that is now behind him.

For now that is it … as can be seen .. nothing about myself since there is really nothing to say.  I am really struggling at the moment to keep things together. 

 

So maybe the world will end, just not in 2012 – LHC

So what does this mean? You want to tell me that when they conceived the idea of the LHC, they had no idea what they were doing.  So how much do the understand now? .. 10%, 20% or 100%.  I doubt that it is 100%, so they have no idea what will really happen when this thing operate at optimum levels and those little protons hit one another and decide to follow their own paths and proton heads.

So the end of the world might be long before 2012.

NSFW – the killer app.

There is always this debate on what will be the next killer app, be it on the phone, desktop or Internet.

This is what Wikipedia say a killer app is:

.. that is so necessary or desirable that it proves the core value of some larger technology ….. A killer app can substantially increase sales of the platform on which it runs.

I definitely likes Hugh’s view much more. And looking at the Wikipedia definition, it make so much sense.
