It replaced an older <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fort\" title=\"Fort\" class=\"mw-redirect\">fort<\/a> called the Fort de Goede Hoop, which was made out of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clay\" title=\"Clay\">clay<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timber\" title=\"Timber\" class=\"mw-redirect\">timber<\/a> and built in 1652 by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jan_van_Riebeeck\" title=\"Jan van Riebeeck\">Jan van Riebeeck<\/a> upon his arrival at the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cape_of_Good_Hope\" title=\"Cape of Good Hope\">Cape<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe purpose of both were to act as a replenishment station for ships<br \/>\npassing the treacherous coast around the Cape on long voyages between<br \/>\nthe <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Netherlands\" title=\"Netherlands\">Netherlands<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dutch_East_Indies\" title=\"Dutch East Indies\">Dutch East Indies<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WebUrbanist ran an article today called Starry Knights: 14 Stellar Star-Shaped Fortresses which did not include our beloved castle in Cape Town.&nbsp; Here is a picture I grabbed from Google Maps.
