Sun open source Java under GPL

One of the best pieces of news in a long time.  I quote from ZDNet:

After years of requests and debates, Sun Microsystems is ready to release Java source code under a Linux-friendly license.

On Monday, it plans to put the code for the programming software under the version 2 of the General Public License (GPLv2), which governs Linux and many other open-source products. The Sun-hosted Java.net Web site will provide access to Java Platform Micro Edition (Java ME) software for mobile phones and Java Platform Standard Edition (Java SE) software for desktop applications.

This is good for everybody and in particularly the Linux community where distributions like Ubuntu is now free to re-distribute the Java platform.

Buying a new car!!

I am busy looking to buy a new car and top of my list is the Honda Civic 5-Door Hatchback.  Have seen and read good things about this car and have driven Honda’s for a good part of my life.

What I am battling about is how to justify R204000.00 for a new car.  Yes it will  be fun to drive around in, but in the end it is just something that takes you from point A to point B.

So if anyone has good arguments why I should not buy this car then I am all ears 🙂

Customer Requirements and complexity

Mark Cathcart wrote on his blog about complexity and completeness and I quote one statement he made:

The real challenge though that IBM faces, is not the complexity of our products, but the complexity of our customers.

This is so true.  How often does we not stare us blind against the complexity of products (anybody that has worked with WebSphere know what I talk about)? Sometime there is a very simple solution to a customers complex requirements.  The customer does not care how complex your product or solution is, all he cares about is whether his requirement is met and his business problem is solved.  In the end it is all about customer satisfaction!

Checky birds next to my house

kiewiet
Originally uploaded by Marius.

Went for a stroll today and in an open area next to where I live, I found this 2 birds (in afrikaans they called a kiewiet) which made a hell of a noise as I walked past. The one even had the cheek to chase me. I did not hang around, did not want to disturb them just in case there was chicks or eggs around.
