Ubuntu and UDU

Today as I am sitting here and reading on IRC about all the guys/gals travelling to Sydney for UDU (Ubuntu Down Under), I wished I had some money to join the guys/gals there. Well I suppose all that needs to be done is to convince sabdfl that the next Ubuntu Conference should be held here in SA and then in Cape Town.

Since Jane (she is the PM for UDU) is from Cape Town should make things a bit easier.

Ubuntu 5.04 and getting it!

I have this old laptop without a hard disk and its battery is not working but it is working great with Ubuntu 4.10 LiveCD — have a look here.

Now with the release of Ubuntu 5.04 I decided it was time to download the LiveCD for it but wow what an nightmare here in South Africa or for anyone that has dialup. I have an ISDN connection with InfinityCall (that means that there is a max call charge of about R9 over off-peak) so I try to download big things over weekends and I try to use and torrent.

So I tried over this weekend and it is a slow and tedious process and while it is downloading my Internet connection is useless.

So if anybody from Cape Town has Ubuntu 5.04 LiveCD on a CD available then give me a shout and I would like to get a copy from you. Yes I did order my bunch of CD’s from shipit but that will take a while to arrive.

I am giving up!

After the debacle of the rugby game yesterday between the Stormers and the Crusaders I have decided to five up my support to the Stormers. Until such time they look like a team that deserves to be in the top 4 of the Super 12/14, I will keep my mouth shut and say or write nothing.

I think this will be a long time since this year they not going to get anywhere. And with the new Super 14 next year I have even less hope. Please comment if you disagree.

What is going on with SA rugby?

No blog written by a South African is complete without some sport content. Luckily this weekend no South African team is playing but looking at the past 5 weeks, out of 20 games to have 2 wins and 1 draw is pathetic.

I am an avid supporter of the Stormers but even they are playing like a bunch of under thirteens. In fact most under thirteens play a lot better rugby than they do.

Telkom and its shenanigans

Unfortunately I am not one of the fortunate ones that have ADSL so I have to depend on my dial-up ISDN connection. I also have InfinityCall. For those that does not know, InfinityCall allow for calls to be capped at a maximum of R7.00 during callmore time.

Until about a month ago I had no problems about it. It was commons to go from Friday, 7pm until Monday, 7am with one call. No disconnect. Since a month or so ago the calls suddenly started to disconnect around midnight. The connection will stay up all day, but come midnight or just after it the call get disconnected. Imagine my iritation when getting up in the morning and finding the line disconnected after starting a big download the previous evening.

To put this in perspective. Assume that there is 10 000 InfinityCall users which now suddenly gets disconnected twice over a weekend. Now we have an extra R14.00 income per user which is R140 000.00 per weekend, bringing to a cool half a million rand extra income per month for Telkom.

My line does not have any problems on it. If it had it would have disconnected during the day also. This looks just too fishy for me. Telkom is trying to generate extra income while they can. If any other people have the same experience then please leave a comment here.
