Famous last words of Marius

I have a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and for a while now whenever I start Ovi Maps, it switches off the phone.  This started when I had Ovi Maps 2.  I upgraded to Ovi Maps 3 (the latest version) and also upgraded the phone firmware to version 31.  Firmware version 40 is not available in my country.

When I run on battery power the phone switches off almost immediately.  Actually just after it ask whether it should go online.  Make no difference whether I answer yes or no.  When it is plugged into power, it sometimes take a while before it switches off.

I have Googled and searched but could not find any solutions anywhere.  Anybody reading here have any suggestions?

This is what a 1GB IBM hard disk looked like in the 1980′s and in the hand is a 1GB SD card.

I am trying out the latest beta of Windows Live Writer and so far it seems to be good.  One little annoying thing is that the window for inserting Tags is a modal-window which means you cannot have it open to add tags while writing the blog.

Space Shuttle Endeavour cuts a bright swath through the dark sky during this night-time launch in January 1998. I just read an entry by Mark Cathcart called Looking back, Unix System Services, Linux et al.

I started my computing life on VM systems way way back, and the fact that I actually know all the acronyms and terms that Mark was using, say’s a lot. This trip down memory lane gave a very good insight into how IBM looked at Unix and then in the later years Linux on their big systems.  I still do not know whether I totally agree or like with the i, x, p and z Series names for IBM’s hardware.  I so much more liked it when it was called 360 Systems, 390′s, 9375′s etc and OS/390 or MVS, VM etc.

Every year I hear somebody say that the mainframe is dying but it just goes from strength to strength.  When it comes to reliability, scalability and pure cost/performance then nothing beats it … even if you throw a multi CPU clustered Intel or AMD machine at it.

When looking at how IBM implement and innovate around Linux, I am confident that in years to come Linux will play an integral role in helping business in optimizing their computing requirements. As an Open Source and Linux supporter, I will use these solutions more and more in my dealings with my customers and clients.

Lastly, I am so glad that the WIN32 API was never implemented and used in the IBM software stack.  Just imagine the situation IBM might have been in today …

IBM’s Sam Palmisano announced that $100million will be spend over the next 2 years on new ideas that was generated earlier this year.  Of the 10 that caught my eye was:

“Digital Me”: Creating a secure, user-friendly service that simplifies storage, management and long-term access to the deluge of personal content that people accumulate (digital photos, videos, music, health and financial records, personal identification documents, files, etc.).

3D Internet: Partnering with others to take the best of virtual worlds and gaming environments to build a seamless, standards-based 3D Internet — the next platform for global commerce and day-to-day business operations.

and

Simplified Business Engines: Developing and bringing to market an intuitive, easy-to-use and pre-packaged set of Web 2.0 services and blade server offerings that allow small and mid-size businesses to easily tap applications customized to their own specific business needs.

 
Will keep and eye on these and see how I can get involved in these initiatives.

The lastest Top 500 list of Super Computers will be released on 14 Nov and to get a sneak preview head over to Top500.

IBM still heads the list with a computer with the performance of 280.6 teraflop/s, more than double the 2nd position. Overall IBM have 47.8% of the entries on the list with HP in second place with 31.2%.

Since I am interested in using next generation DVD (ie Blu-ray or HD DVD), I thought it might be worthwhile what it was all about.  Here is a link to a good article that explains what all the fuss is about.  Still does not say who the winner will be.
