Twitter problems.

Today was my day with Twitter problems.

Some background – I am running Ubuntu on all my machines and have used Twirl as a Twitter client.  Now being on Linux also means that the version of Adobe Air that I run is very beta.  So this morning when I started Twirl, it just gave me an empty screen.  Being busy all day, I never had any time to really look at it.  When I got home, I tried Twirl again and it say that a new version is available and would I like to upgrade.  Like a good boy I upgraded and then the surprise.  Sorry but Twirl needs a newer version of Air which is not available on Linux.  So I am really snookered.

Then I decided to have a look at what native Linux Twitter clients is available and found gWibber (where does this name come from).  Installed it and when I run it I am greeted with this:
mariusb@mariusb-ubuntu:~$ gwibber
/home/mariusb/.gtkrc-2.0:10: Invalid symbolic color 'selected_bg_color'
/home/mariusb/.gtkrc-2.0:10: error: invalid identifier `selected_bg_color', expected valid identifier
error: duplicate REP tables used
Failure loading aff file /usr/share/myspell/dicts/en_ZA.aff
console message: undefined @1: ReferenceError: Can't find variable: addMessages
console message: undefined @22: ReferenceError: Can't find variable: setGtkConfig

mariusb@mariusb-ubuntu:~$

So the only way to follow Twitter at the moment is via the web client. Currently trying out gTwitter and but I do not really like it .. very limited.

So Mr/Miss/Mrs Lazyweb, any advice to get my Twitter addiction without the web client.

27Dinner & The Future of Work

Wednesday evening I attended the 27Dinner and it was great to see some old faces and meet some new people Face to Face.  All in all it was a great evening of just socializing with old and new friends.  And oh the talks was great too 🙂

One of the questions I was asked over and over again when people hear I work for IBM, is what is a big corporate like IBM doing at a social event like 27Dinner.  Few people know that IBM with 400000 permanent employees is dependent in its daily work on social software, networks and communities. Each of the social tools like Twitter, Blogging, Wikis, Forums etc has an IBM equivalent inside.  Also we have social tools inside that I have not seen outside yet, but cannot say much about that.

One of my colleagues, Luis Suarez, has recorded a video on The Future of Work and the use of social networks and tools.  To give you an idea how he works – he works for IBM Netherlands, stay in the Canary Islands and report to 2 bosses in the United States.

The Future of Work by Luis Suarez from Luis Suarez on Vimeo.

The video is fairly long but gives a good idea what he thinks. In the video he also discusses the use of email – here is a blog posting from him on that subject.

Can Social Networking tools replace e-mail?

A colleague, IBMer Luis Suarez, wrote an article in the NYtimes on how he is using Social Networking tools to reduce the use of e-mail.  And I quote

E-mail can become extinct, if not repurposed altogether, even at big companies like I.B.M. An e-mail in-box no longer needs to be like Pandora’s box.

I am not sure whether I totally agree with this … there is still a place for e-mail.  As another IBMer Ed Brill say and I quote

Even if you move all of your collaboration to other tools, there still needs to be a prompt, a push, a tickle, an alert … something that draws you into the collaboration.

And this push or tickle as Ed calls it is usually via email. If somebody comments on a blog post of mine I get prompted about it via email.  If somebody follow me on Twitter I get informed via email.  If somebody send me a message via Facebook then I get informed via e-mail.

So to answer my own question, no I do not think so.  Yes it can reduce the volume of email (an I do not talk about all the spam) in your inbox but totally replace, no I do not think so.  I would love to hear your comments about it.

Geekdinner @ Greens

After months of not attending the Geekdinner, I went to last night’s one that was held at Greens in Plattekloof.

It was really enjoyable.  The food was great and Perdeberg sponsored the wine — thanks Perdeberg.

It was good the see Ian, Tania, Neil, Bob and many others again.  I also met Bev, the one and only Feisty Female  — was great meeting the person behind the tweets.  Also got to meet Kerry-Anne and Paul from Cape Town Daily Photo.  Kerry-Anne, hope the moving today is not to strenuous and that it goes well.  Paul, you must enjoy your tip to Vegas, am sure you will enjoy it.  I am so envious.

Ian was his best again with his talk on Hippie, Green and something about technology. Bob told us all about what is going on the payment systems and the Presentation Karaoke was just hilarious.  I did not get the name of the presenter that tried to find his way through Tania’s slides, but he did an excellent job.

All in all, a great evening with a bunch of Cape Town’s geeks.

Embarrassing Facebook experience ….

How embarrassing can Facebook be .. well a lot when one does not look what one does.  All these apps does not behave the same and can confuse one when you are not on the lookout.

Over the weekend somebody (rather not say who) send me a Superwall picture.  It was one of those picture one would not generally show around — you know what I am talking about.  Before deleting it, I decided to send it to one of my friends.  Not knowing that when selecting Forward in Superwall it selects all friends by default,  I unselected the friend I wanted to send the picture to and Forwarded it.

After I hit the Forward button, I noticed to my horror that I forwarded the dreaded picture to all my Friends.  Luckily one receive a notification of who all received the forwarded post and this allowed me to delete most of the forwarded pictures.

I know I did not managed to delete all and if you are one of those that got the picture before I deleted it, then sorry if it embarrassed you.  It was a real boo-boo on my part and I apologize.

Lesson I learned the hard way.  So be careful what you do on Facebook.

Reach for a Dream needs your help!!!

Everyday I come to the realization how fortunate I am.  I have people I call my friends and people that call me their friends.   I have great kids who are healthy and do most of the things they want to do.  However there are lots of people and especially kids that have dreams but have no way in getting there.  That is where Reach for a Dream comes in.  It is one of my favourite charities and you can also help.

Richard Mulvey will be climbing Kilimanjaro to raise funds for the Reach for a Dream foundation.  Here is a video about the climb:

If you can help then please pledge via this form.  Every little bit will help to make some kid’s dream come true.

My blogging friends, please follow Mike’s and my lead and spread the word about this and post a blog entry.

I always wanted to go climb Kilimanjaro and this is just a little more inspiration to go and do it.

Found Stormhoek at Checkers

As mentioned yesterday, Stormhoek is now available at your nearest Checkers.  Went down to my nearest Checkers (Willowbridge) earlier today and found some Stormhoek Pinotage 2006, as can be seen from the pic to the left.  Click on it for a larger one.

Will enjoy some of it this evening .. will post my view of it afterwards.

Now for that T-shirt and would not mind the supply of Stormhoek for a year either.

Yippee, Stormhoek in the Retail stores!!!!

After drinking some Stormhoek wine at 27dinners, I always wondered where to buy some.  Now it is available at Checkers according to this post.

You can even add Stormhoek as your Facebook friend and hopefully you will end up with a Stormhoek T-shirt. Hope mine is in the post 🙂

It is great to eventually be able to get some.  I will make sure to pop into my nearest Checkers tomorrow morning to see if they have stock.  That will be the Checkers at Willowbridge.
