Good to be a South African!! — Synthasite

One of the RSS feeds that show up in my feed reader is of Ajax MagazineOne of the feeds was on Synthasite, developed in Cape Town, South Africa.

It is good to see work done in South Africa gets mentioned on prominent international sites and being tested by big companies like Amazon.

Synthasite is also being tested on
Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud, which in theory allows it to be
infinitely scalable, although accounts will initially be limited.

I have not had a look at Synthasite yet but will give it a test and see how it performs.

Well done to Vinny and the team .. keep up the good work.

cocomment — Never miss a comment follow-up again

I comment fairly often on other people’s blog entries but always forget to return to see what responses I receive on my comments.  Not anymore.  Thanks to Miguel dos Santos for putting me onto cocomment. With a Firefox extension (everybody is using Firefox, right) or even adding a plug-in to your own hosted blog, you can now track all you comments in one central place.  How neat.

Geekdinner – Cape Town – 28 May 2007

It is another Geekdinner tonight and I cannot make it.  I looked so forward to it but having only returned from overseas make things a bit tight when it comes to time.  In any case, I still have not catch up on all my lost sleep so would probably fell asleep in my dinner.

Enjoy and see you all around next time.  Will catch up on everything when all the reports hits the blogsphere.

Be carefull … do not steal your neighbor’s WIFI!

Do not know whether we have laws in this country that governs this but the ECT act might have something on it.  See in the UK a person was fined for using somebody’s WIFI without the persons permission.

Just had a look at all the WIFI connections available to me from the houses around me in my complex and there is a couple that is open with no security what so ever. How ethical and legal would it be if I just connect to their WIFI and started downloading?  With the restricted bandwidth that we have in SA, this can save me a bit of bandwidth for other things.  Neighbors, do not worry, I will not steal your bandwidth, but please secure your WIFI routers.

IBM SA wins new contracts

Over the past couple of weeks IBM has won 2 major contracts in South Africa. One in access of R1 million with ABSA and another with SAB.

This is great news for IBM South Africa and shows again the value of IBM SA as part of the greater IBM worldwide.

I would have loved to see more of an Application Development component in these contracts since that is the area where I operate in and provide value to the bigger IBM.

I like Amatomu — I lie — I love it

I just love Amatomu .. It just do what it is suppose to do right.  And every time I pay it a visit there is something new.  See today on the My Stats page that it now shows how many times one’s blog is favourited (is this spelled correctly – I copied exactly from the page).  Mine still have a big fat zero next to it.

Guys, and if there is any gals involved, you are doing a great job. Keep it up.

Why is Telkom so anti everything?

I just read an article in the latest iWeek on the issues that the roll out of broadband in Cape Town is encountering.  Here is a link to the article. (You need to be a subscriber, which is free, to read the article).

Basically it is about Telkom that is objecting to the awarding of the contract by the Cape Town municipality to a consortium consisting of MTN and Cornastone. The reasons Telkom gives is so childish ie – (1) that some old law is still in existence and only they are allowed to provide connectivity and (2) they were not informed that they did not make the shortlist.

As Mike Brierley from MTN says

.. the matter illustrates Telkom’s bullying tactics ..

Come on Telkom, grow up.

Little piece of software I cannot live without — it is realy great.

Want spell checking, thesaurus (even used it to look up the spelling of this), Wikipedia, Wiktionary and more from any application then head over to WordWeb.  After you install this little gem then it just sits in your system tray and wait on you to CNTRL-rightclick on a word and open pops all the info you need about that word.

How to flirt on the road with your car ..

We all know how to say thanks when another driver let you pass on the road or give you a gap at a busy intersection.  But what if you want to say more than thanks .. see a nice looking girl or guy in the car next to you?  Well some German guy came up with a thing called the Flashbox to set off a series of indicator flicks that mean something

This might get real interesting and confusing if all the cars around you suddenly start flashing their indicators and everyone start “chatting” with everyone.  Is this just another form of social networking and community building?
